Carpark galleries and laneways put indigenous artwork on show for $2 million worth of work

The Land & Environment Council of Northern Queensland commissioned a design for a cultural centre and laneway at the northern boundary of the city of Darwin.

The $2 million project will include 10 art galleries, a museum, laneways and a park with views across the city and the Tasman Sea and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Land & Environment Council of Northern Queensland's chief executive, Chris McEleney, told ABC radio Darwin that he didn't want his clients to feel intimidated into agreeing to the deal because it did not need to be a permanent structure.

"There's nothing against indigenous art – it's just that the heritage of their communities, and the heritage of the areas they come from, is in peril," he said.

The first of the 10 works to go on display is a piece by Aboriginal artist and illustrator Dwayne Creswell titled How Can We Keep the Wild Where It's Been?

Creswell was born into a small Indigenous village on the Darling river and later grew up in the remote northern towns of Wirraka and Parke, his mother's homeland in the area.

"I would love to see it as something that is a living legacy of those communities," he said.

"I think it's time for our community to be able to sit back and really reflect on our history as a community, as a nation."

This is the second time Land & Environment Council of Northern Queensland has commissioned art from indigenous artisans. A $50,000 art installation at the Darwin Landfill featured the work of young Aboriginal women, as well as an installation by artist Richard Stagg at the Brisbane train station.
